Meet Our Team of Doctors …



Dr. Tutteli Pukarinen, DVM


Following a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of British Columbia, Tutteli graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1994 with Distinction. She also has training in acupuncture. Tutteli has owned the practice since 1999.  She really enjoys working with cats, dogs, and little pocket pets. She enjoys cross-country skiing, yoga, hiking, camping, paddle boarding and spending time with her two sons.




Dr. Victoria Van Wyk, DVM


Victoria graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 1991, and received the Top Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Award. This was followed by an internship at Michigan State University in small animal medicine and surgery. She is a dog agility enthusiast and is passionate about her two collies, her Australian Kelpie and her new young Border Collie.   When not competing in Agility Trials, Victoria and her husband enjoy hiking with their dogs.

Update May 2017: Dr Van Wyk is available for limited appointments to see cats and small dogs.




Dr. Robin Rainford, DVM


Robin graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2006 and moved to Vancouver Island in 2007 when she joined the practice as one of our veterinarians. She has a special interest in emergency and critical care medicine. Robin enjoys running, mountain biking, skiing, swimming, camping and sometimes just lounging on the beach with her husband and son, and their dog Bailey.

In October 2016, Robin became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist and hopes to change post op and post injury care in our patients, as well as help our geriatric patients with their stiff muscles and achy joints.




Dr. Kate Wood, DVM


Kate obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Simon Fraser University in 2005 and graduated with Distinction from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. She and her husband moved from Saskatoon, SK to Campbell River in the fall of 2010 and enjoy fishing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, camping and just spending time outdoors.




Dr. Zita Doeschner, DVM


After graduating from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover, Germany in 2001, Zita enjoyed working with the Yukon Veterinary Services in Whitehorse. During her time in the North, she completed the accreditation requirements for the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. Zita is married with two beautiful young children and a Pete, their beautiful black cat. She has worked with us since 2010.




Dr. Richelle Kendall, DVM


Richelle completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology and an Animal Health Technology diploma before graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine with Distinction in 2008. Richelle worked for a few years at a private practice in Courtenay, BC before joining the Coastland team in January of 2010. Richelle is married and has two young sons. Her family also includes a goofy American Bulldog named Lenny and two cats, Mattie and Phoenix. In her spare time, Richelle and her family enjoy hiking, mountain biking, camping and exploring nature.


Dr. Tammi Whelan, DVM

We wish to thank Dr. Whelan for all her hard work in the past few years.
